Blue Cave Snorkeling Complete Guide — Location, Pricing, Highlights & FAQ
Everything about Blue Cave snorkeling in Okinawa — why it glows blue, best seasons, pricing, what to bring, and answers to the most common questions.
There is one place in Okinawa everyone should experience at least once. The Blue Cave.
Light refracts through the water and turns the cave a mystical blue — it's one of Okinawa's most treasured natural spectacles. This guide covers everything: location, pricing, highlights, best timing, and answers to the most common questions.
Where is the Blue Cave? Location and access
Blue Cave (Maeda Cape) is in Onna Village, central Okinawa Island — about 50–60 minutes by car from Naha. It's a natural sea cave along the Maeda Cape coastline. You enter the water from the cape, pass through a gap in the rocks, and emerge inside. Water depth is 1–8m. Emerald Reef includes free hotel pickup, so no rental car is needed. We cover hotels in Onna, Yomitan, Chatan and Okinawa City.
Why does the cave glow blue? The science explained
The blue glow is caused by light refraction and scattering. Sunlight enters through a submerged gap in the rock. As it passes through seawater, short-wavelength blue light scatters least and passes most efficiently through the water column. Inside the dark cave, only this blue light stands out — making the walls and water surface shimmer ethereally. The effect is most stunning on clear days between 10am and noon. Overcast days, rain, and late afternoon all reduce the intensity.
