When Is the Best Season for Snorkeling in Okinawa? A Month-by-Month Guide to Water Temp, Weather & What to Wear

"What month is best for snorkeling in Okinawa?" — the peak is July–September, but you can actually enjoy it year-round. A local guide explains month-by-month water temperature, weather and what to wear, plus how to stay comfortable even in cooler months.

The verdict: July–September is best — but Okinawa is swimmable almost year-round

The verdict: July–September is best — but Okinawa is swimmable almost year-round

The best season for snorkeling in Okinawa is July–September: water around 28–30°C, plenty of sunshine and superb visibility. But Okinawa is subtropical, so in practice May–November is high season, and even midwinter is swimmable in a wetsuit. The rainy season runs mid-May to late June, yet tropical rain often passes quickly, leaving gaps to swim. Typhoon season (Aug–Sep) carries some cancellation risk, but we propose rescheduling the day before. "Enjoyable any time, but most comfortable from early summer to early autumn" — that's a local guide's honest take.

Month-by-month: how spring, summer, autumn and winter differ

Spring (Mar–May): water 21–24°C, fewer crowds, comfortable in a wetsuit. Summer (Jun–Sep): water 27–30°C — the best season, warmest sea and top visibility; book early as school holidays get busy. Autumn (Oct–Nov): water 24–27°C, typhoons ease and heat softens — an underrated sweet-spot season. Winter (Dec–Feb): water 20–22°C, a wetsuit is a must, but the crisp air makes the Blue Cave's blue even more vivid, with fewer people and a relaxed pace.

Water temp & what to wear: wetsuit vs rash guard

The key to comfort is what you wear. In water 26°C+ (summer), a rash guard + swimsuit is enough — it also guards against sunburn and jellyfish. In water below 25°C (spring/autumn/winter), a wetsuit keeps you warm so you can stay in longer. Our free rentals are a mask, fins and a life jacket — we don't provide wetsuits or rash guards, so if you feel the cold or swim for long, bring your own wetsuit or rash guard. Also bring sunscreen, a hat, a towel and a drink. Midsummer UV is intense, so a long-sleeve rash guard is ideal.
