Travelling Solo This Autumn? Okinawa's Sea from Just One Person — Fully Private, With Photos of You in Them

Autumn, once the summer crowds thin out, is made for solo travel. But plenty of people hesitate: "Joining a group tour alone feels awkward." "Travelling alone, I never get photos of myself." At Emerald Reef, even one person gets a fully private tour. Here is how to enjoy Okinawa's sea precisely because you are on your own.

No awkwardness of joining a shared tour alone

No awkwardness of joining a shared tour alone

Look for marine activities as a solo traveller and most of what you find are shared tours that bundle several bookings together. Being the only single person among families and couples can feel a little awkward. Every Emerald Reef tour is fully private, and you can book as just one person. The tour is only you — no one else to fit around, one-to-one with your guide. This September alone we have had solo guests on both snorkeling and skin diving. Travelling alone here is nothing unusual.

Solving the solo traveller's problem: no photos of yourself

Solving the solo traveller's problem: no photos of yourself

The saddest thing about travelling alone is coming home with plenty of scenery and almost no photos of yourself — and underwater, selfies are close to impossible. We shoot with two cameras, the guide's and yours, and all the photo data is free (video free for a limited time). You surrounded by tropical fish, you floating in blue water — shots from angles you could never take yourself arrive afterwards. Actually being in your own travel record turns out to be surprisingly precious when you travel solo.

On your own, the pace and content are yours

One-to-one means the pace and content are entirely up to you. Not confident in the water? Take it slowly in the shallows, then head a little further out once you settle. Watch the fish while your guide names them, or have lots of photos taken — your call. If you want to dive properly, try skin diving: you learn breathing technique one-on-one, and progress comes remarkably fast — a hidden advantage of coming alone. And during fish feeding, the whole swirling school is yours.

Solo prices, and the best autumn dates

Solo prices, and the best autumn dates

Solo prices: snorkeling in Onna ¥13,000, the Blue Cave ¥15,000, Naha sea-turtle snorkeling ¥16,000, skin diving ¥16,000 (ages 10–59). All include hotel pickup, gear and photo data. In autumn, weekdays from late September through October are the sweet spot — the holidays are over, the water is quiet, and same-day or next-day bookings are easier to get (the Oct 10–12 long weekend is the exception). October water is still 26–27°C. Why not spend some time to yourself in Okinawa's sea? LINE and the contact form are open 24/7.
