Even beginners can fully enjoy Okinawa's ocean. That is why we are here.
Not sure where to snorkel? Nervous about your first time? We guide you to three stunning spots—selected for clarity, safety, and access—so you can have an unforgettable experience from day one.
Why Okinawa's ocean has world-class clarity
Okinawa averages 30m of underwater visibility — among the world's best. Two reasons: the Kuroshio current delivers fresh, clear water from the open Pacific, while century-old coral reefs act as a natural filter and support rich marine ecosystems. Water temperature stays 23–29°C, so no wetsuit is needed from April to November.
① Blue Cave (Onna Village) — Okinawa's most iconic snorkel spot
Sunlight refracting through a rock crevice turns the cave a magical blue — this is Okinawa's most famous snorkel spot. At just 1–5m depth it's ideal for beginners, with over 100 species including clownfish and butterfly fish. The light is most spectacular on sunny mornings between 10am and noon.
② Maeda Cape (Onna Village) — Your best chance to swim with sea turtles
Maeda Cape is where we get the most requests to see sea turtles — and for good reason. Green sea turtles live here year-round, and morning visits to the reef give you the best chance of a close encounter. Visibility is around 30m. We enter via a dedicated safe point so beginners can reach the turtle zone comfortably.
③ Kerama Islands — World-renowned "Kerama Blue" clarity
Just 50 minutes by high-speed ferry from Naha, the Kerama Islands are famous worldwide for "Kerama Blue" — exceptional clarity you have to see to believe. Designated a national park in 2014, the area hosts roughly 10% of all coral species documented worldwide. Currents are gentle, making it ideal for first-timers. Sea turtles and manta rays are also seen here regularly.
5 preparation tips to ensure a great first snorkel
