Silver Week 2026 in Okinawa: Can You Still Swim in Late September? Water Temps, What to Wear, and the 5-Day Holiday Explained
Silver Week 2026 runs Saturday September 19 to Wednesday September 23 — the first five-day September holiday in Japan in 11 years. If you are planning Okinawa, here is an honest answer from a Chatan-based snorkel guide on whether the sea is still swimmable in late September: water temps, what to wear, and typhoon risk.
Silver Week 2026: five straight days, September 19–23
Silver Week 2026 runs Saturday September 19 to Wednesday September 23. Monday the 21st is Respect for the Aged Day and Wednesday the 23rd is the Autumnal Equinox — and because Tuesday the 22nd sits between two national holidays, Japanese law turns it into a holiday as well. Add the weekend and you get five straight days off. This alignment hasn't happened since 2015 — eleven years ago. With five days, even after travel days you have a solid two or three days to enjoy Okinawa. "We got the time off, but is the sea still swimmable in late September?" That is the question we hear most, so let's go through it.
Late-September water is barely cooler than midsummer
The short answer: late September is one of the best times of year for the sea in Okinawa. Sea temperatures here typically stay around 27–28°C even in September — barely different from peak August. Water heats and cools far more slowly than air, so summer warmth lingers well after the air starts cooling. Many guests actually find it more comfortable than midsummer, and the reason is heat and UV. By late September daytime highs settle around 30°C and the ferocious August sun eases off, so heatstroke risk drops and you burn less easily — noticeably easier on children and older family members. Silver Week is consistently one of our busiest booking periods of the year.
What to wear: do you need a wetsuit?
In late September a swimsuit is all you need. We provide mask, fins and life jacket as free rentals, so all you bring is swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes. One thing to note: we do not provide wetsuits. If you feel the cold easily or plan to stay in the water a long time, bring a rash guard — it doubles as sun protection. Beyond that, a big towel, a dry bag, beach sandals and drinks make the day easier. You can get chilly in the breeze after coming out of the water, so something to throw on is especially worth packing for children. If you bring sunscreen, we would be grateful if you chose a reef-safe type.
The tail of typhoon season: cancellations and rescheduling
Honestly: September is still the tail end of typhoon season. But a typhoon does not have to ruin a trip — in Okinawa the water is often startlingly clear a few days after one passes. We call off a tour only when conditions exceed our safety limits, and when that happens we offer a new date or a full refund. We contact you by the day before, and check in again on the morning when it is borderline. With a five-day holiday you have room to move, which is exactly the advantage of a long break: if day one is out, we can usually reschedule within the same holiday. Tell us your travel dates when you book and we will suggest backup slots too. Every Emerald Reef tour is fully private, children from age 3 are welcome, and photo data is yours free. LINE and the contact form are open 24/7.
